Colliers Ceremony
Falkirk Labour attends the 100 year memorial of the local pit disaster
25th September, 2023

Local Labour politicians played their part in honouring the 40 victims of the Redding Pit Disaster which took place 100 years ago.

Former MP Michael Connarty, Provost Robert Bissett and former provost Pat Reid each read out names of victims of the tragedy when floods of water from other mine workings cascaded into the section where the men were working.

Party members, MSP Richard Leonard, Falkirk Council Labour Group Leader Councillor Anne Hannah, Councillor Siobhan Paterson and former councillor Allyson Black were among hundreds attending the ceremony.

It was the culmination of five years of hard work by the Sir William Wallace Grand Lodge of Scotland Free Colliers that saw the unveiling of a reconstructed memorial to those who lost their lives.

Local historian Ian Scott told the poignant story of that fateful September 25th, the names of the dead were read before children from local primary school made an emotional contribution with poems and readings.

Councillor Hannah said: “It was a moving ceremony and the new monument will be a long-lasting remembrance of those men who so tragically lost their lives in this terrible tragedy.

“It affected many families within our communities and it is right and proper that we will continue to mark this event for years into the future.”
