Residents of a Falkirk care home have a new bar… and two new heroes.

Staff at the Grahamston Care Home were keen to provide a bar so that residents of the facility could share a pint or other drink with family or friends who had come to visit.

When it was mentioned to Councillor Alf Kelly, Falkirk Council’s Older People’s Champion, when he visited with Labour Group Leader Councillor Anne Hannah, he didn’t let matters lie.

He said: “The staff were keen to turn the atrium into an area where residents could sit with their visitors, watch television and, as lots of us do, enjoy a wee drink.

“I had a think about who could help with some joinery work and straight away came up with my council colleague Jack Redmond who, as well as being a great councillor, is a talented professional joiner.

“When I asked him he didn’t hesitate in agreeing to help and so, four days later, we turned up, Jack with his tools and me with my coffee cup. I have to admit Jack did the work, I acted as gofer.”

He went on: “The home as a huge television which will be put up in the same area. One guy has his son over every Saturday and they sit and watch the football. Now they can enjoy have a pint as they do it. Other families will be able to do the same.”

“The fantastic staff are passionate about making Grahamston House as much like a home as they can and not an institution. They are succeeding.”
